Restoring 70-78 Wheel Spoilers (fixing broken & cracks)

Post by 4SPEED on Sun Oct 17, 2010 9:45 pm

I have a set of spoilers for my 77 but every one is broken with cracks. but I have all the pieces that are broken off.
pics of the broken. there all about the same.
cracked

broken with a big crack

to fix them I used a solder iron to fuse them back together. fist I cut a (V) down the crack (deep) then started folding the plastic back into the (V) I cut out.

after it got hard I DA sanded it. and then used some epoy over it.

the rear spolers are fixed. I'll 220 sand them next before I prime them. I did use glass filler on them after I sanded the epoxy.

and a pic with the welting I got. it doesnt look correct , but should work fine.

time for the fronts Smile

That sounds like pretty out of the box thinking. Was it your technique to use the soldering iron?

Thanks for sharing. Good Info.

well I've done plastic welding before so I thought I should be able to make it work with the soldering iron.
I have a unfixable spoiler that I cut small stips from. to use like a filler if needed.
and just kept folding the plastic in the crack.
I did a test piece first. welded it , sanded it smooth, and tried to brake it. it broke after it was folded almost in half.
so I'd say it should never crack there again
