I went to the Drag Strip - Yep, I raced my car

Post by rkellerjr on Sun Aug 22, 2010 11:26 pm

I had a blast today! We went down to the Northeast Dragway down in Hertford, NC for a day of fun and eats. I only ran the car four times as I didn't want to beat on it too much but man oh man is that fun! The only unfortunate part was the car didn't perform as well as I thought it would with the rebuild. Here are the numbers and pics will follow. And don't forget to check out the video of all four runs, car sounds good!

My best times...
Reaction Time: 0.5271
60 Foot: 2.12
330 Foot: 6.12
1/8 Mile ET: 9.40
1/8 Mile MPH: 75

Which translates to a very poor 14.66 1/4 mile time! Yikes!! Course, my tires were slipping and this was the first time I've ever been on a track so I think, in the end, the car is a solid high 13 car. Cool. I had a blast anyway! Pics and Video...

Staged just before the briefing and ready to go!

First race, this is the first race in the video as well.

And the very cool video...

Rick,

The car looks great. I wonder if you had better tires then you might have had quicker times?

Still pretty decent numbers though.

Rich what rear end are you running? But it does look and sound like a Great time. The closest I have ever been to that kind of fun is on a Dyno.

Ya, I think with better tires and a few more runs with a good tune and she will run in the 13's.

Here's the list of parts used to build the engine last year...

Speed Pro pistons,
Moly rings
Bored .040, honed, balanced w/plate
Crank ground
"competition" valve grind with oversize exhaust seats (for the 1.77 valves)
Forged rods
FM main bearings
Clevite rod bearings
DuraBond cam bearings
Pioneer expansion plugs (brass)
Pioneer "positive" valve stem seals (exhaust, "intake" seals included in gasket set) w/springs (may not need springs, haven't checked)
Victor gasket set for "stock" look
GraphTite rear seal
Stainless intake and exhaust valves
High volume (NOT high pressure) Melling oil pump w/new driveshaft
Flywheel
Roller Tip Rockers
Q-jet carburetor
RAM Air III 3" Manifolds

Transmision is a TH350 w/shift kit, which I had rebuilt in 2007. When I got the car it had a 4.11 rear end so I found one out of a '77 Trans Am which had a posi-trac 3.23 which I had cleaned and checked back in 2008.
