There will be many empty Pontiac Dealer lots on June 1st.

It is sad that General Motors abandoned the performance line of cars and the brand image.

Thanks for posting....It's a shame yes , but the last Pontiac offerings other then the G8 (Bad name) and the Solstice were terrible products....IMHO

Pontiac, just like Saturn Division lost its identity and was absorbed into the corporate car design philosophy.

They were building cars like the G3, G5, G6, Vibe, Torrent, Solstise, Astra, Aura and Sky.

All of these cars shared the same melted jelly bean ovoid design and shared corrporate motor and driveline components. The cars were plagued with service problems and repair problems. They had no identity, no uniqueness and no soul.

In the end they had no buyers.

Same thing here

Post by Steve on Sat Jun 12, 2010 9:54 pm

I have been doing the same thing, here is our local former Pontiac dealer. If you read Jim Wangers interview in Pontiac Enthusiast magazine he tells it like it is. Pontiac no longer built excitement, they were trying to build BMW knock offs. I looked at a G6 a few years back and you couldn't even get navigation with it, how can that compete with BMW? And why was the Saturn Sky more agressive looking than the Solstice? Jim Wangers said Pontiac hired a bunch of executives who had no car experience at all, the came from Revlon or some foolish place like that to reinvent the car business. Apparently reinvention meant building cheaper BMW's without any options available. In my mind Pontiac died in 2002 when the last Firebird rolled off the line. To me they have been dead a long time. The past few years Pontiac has been wandering around with an oxygen mask and cane sufferring a slow death.

I predict that Buick and Mercury will be the next two car divisions that will be discontinued.

Buick, just like Pontiac has lost its identity and is making cars to compete with Acura and Lexus. But on all levels the Buicks fall short.

Mercury sales are just 5% of the total of all Fords.

What remarkable car has Mercury introduced in the last 20 years?

I read Jim Wangers interview and it was very enlightening. GM hired people from outside the auto industry figuring if they could sell shoes or whatever, they could apply the same rules to cars. WRONG. Evil or Very Mad As Mr. Wangers said, these people didn't understand what Pontiac was all about. If you don't understand the product and why it's been successful for so many years, you can't take the company in the right direction. I think the reason the Mustang has survived is that Ford didn't stray from what made the car popular. Whoever decided that Pontiac should take on BMW, clearly missed the ball. Back in the good old days, most of the people in charge were car guys first.

As long as Buicks sell in China, GM will keep Buick alive.
